The School of Social Work held its annual recognition breakfast on May 13th and welcomed 75 of its field instructors to CIBC Hall. The School places approximately 150 students every year in Hamilton and surrounding area in various health and social service organizations. The School thanked those in attendance for their mentoring, teaching, and ongoing support of students throughout the year.
Addressing the field instructor attendees, Janice Chaplin, Field Education Co-ordinator stressed:
“You are what makes our program come alive -you help students navigate social work practice in a very complicated world (increasingly so!) that we live in today by leaning into social justice, leaning into our values and encouraging students to bring all who they are into practice and with your guidance, find their own way of becoming a social worker.”
The event is also an opportunity to present awards to the field instructor community.
The New Field Instructor Award, given to a new field instructor who has been in the role for a maximum of three years and who has made exceptional contributions to social work students’ learning and professional development, was awarded to Kristin Liotksis, social worker at Juravinski Hospital.
The Sheila Sammon Award for Excellence in Field Instruction, given to a field instructor who has made exceptional contributions to social work students’ learning and professional development and to the School’s field education program for more than10 years and who, in doing so, extends Sheila’s commitment to skilled and just practice, was awarded to Jessica Wright, Child Protection Worker at Catholic Children’s Aid Society.
