Ontario Long Term Care homes: Social Work advocacy

Email to the Ontario Association of Social Workers, the Canadian Association for Social Work Education’s (CASWE) Schools of Social Work in Ontario, & to Premier Doug Ford and Ontario Opposition Parties.

Feb 02, 2021

We are social work educators and Ontario human service practitioners working in a variety of community and social service settings. We are declaring that today Ontario’s Long-Term Care (LTC) homes are humanitarian disasters.

We are joining with the many Doctors for Justice, who are blowing the whistle against Premier Doug Ford and his Conservative Ontario Government for failing to improve grossly inadequate staffing levels and salaries in LTC homes to manage the rapid spread of COVID 19. As a result, LTC residents are experiencing inhumane conditions, violations of their human rights, and too many horrendous deaths that could be prevented.

Doctors for Justice are urging that governments end for-profit LTC homes. We agree. There is overwhelming evidence that for-profit LTC homes have had far worse outcomes during the pandemic as compared to non-profit and municipal LTC homes. We join with social justice advocates who together represent more than 70,000 long-term care workers, urging that effective action is needed now. We believe Premier Doug Ford must finally step up, or resign immediately.

We are writing this open letter to ask that your members:

  • Sign the letter by Doctors for Justice, found at this link:

  • Engage in social activism as an organization, in order to end for-profit LTC homes, and improve all other harmful conditions in these homes.

In solidarity with LTC residents, family care-givers, and LTC medical and other social care staff,
