Field Instructor Courses

Field Instructors are both educators and supervisors. These courses are designed to develop instructor and supervisory skills.


Level One

Jennie Vengris will facilitate the level 1 course. This non-credit course will consist of 12 hours of instruction which includes discussion exercises and practical skills related to field education. There is no cost and no exam. At the end of the training, recognition for completion of the course will be given by the School of Social Work. We ask that field instructors in their first and second years take this course. Please register as soon as possible by contacting Lorna O'Connell at 905-525-9140 ext. 23795 or email REGISTRATION IS LIMITED. No confirmation will be sent; however, we will contact you if the course is full.

Preference will be given to persons currently functioning as Field Instructors for McMaster. You must attend at least 9/12 hours.

Level Two

Level 2 Field Instructor Training Course. Janice Chaplin will facilitate the Level 2 course.  This seminar style, non-credit, no fee, course will cover participant selected topics. The participants may be involved in discussions, problem solving exercises, role plays and review of tapes. Field Instructors are encouraged to bring examples of their practice as field instructors for group discussion.

People who have been Field Instructors for three or more students, and those who have attended Level 1, are encouraged to register. The course will build on knowledge gained from basic field education courses, workshops and/or literature.

This is a seminar, minimum enrolment 7, limited to 15 in total. Date Time Location - TBA Fall 2020

*May be eligible for re-certification credit with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers
